Semper Fido

________________________________

Around this time of year I think of two things

sitting around a fire in a mountain cabin

with a furry friend and some good cheer

and all the other yules that went before

All those years as a child amid family doings

all those years in between in gatherings of friends

all are pale beside those times

with one four footed friend

this faux cow sits on Highway 12 on the way from Santa Rosa to Sebastopol on the north side of the highway. it's been there for a few years now and was created by the artist who has sculptures on Florence Street in Sebastopol. the scultures have a cartoony feel to them and are constructed with recycled things.
since this sculpture has been out standing in its field, I've noticed small calves nursing and other cows hobnobbing and cavorting with the faux cow. finally had a camera with me and caught a moment when the faux cow is spending some quality time with a couple of real cows. note the one real cow mimicing the faux cow by doing the same ear thing. also note that one of the cows has pulled off the front chest panel of the faux cow which is sitting on the ground.
double click on the picture for a larger version to see the detail such as the cow hiding behind the faux cow (she went back there and looked from under when I approached with camera).
Sonoma County Art, ya gotta love it - yeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaw.

_____________________________
when the animal settlers yearned to celebrate
when they had the need to carouse and party hearty
When the cats had that urge to meow
they got their favorite dogs and got down

later people called it the first thanksgiving
all the humans would dress up
like the kitty cat settlers and doggy dog indians
it became a cult celebration

everybody loved it except the turkeys

Liberty has the eyes, mouth and chin of a gypsy

of upper new york bay laps
somewhere near her reconstructed feet

grandpa phil the wop saw her in the early 1900's
and soon thereafter chopped his name short
before he made his way down to the city of steel
where he met anna near the three rivers
____________________________
she wears a bit of the bay on her cheek
while pursing her lips to the thought
of another island where the one that moved the brush
and wore a chin like that was born

liberty is where you find her
with arm held up and gaze far focused
raising a torch to the sky
like a toast to peace and love and hope

beach blanket bananas

____________________________

green and saltwater glistening,

thousands of bananas washed ashore

on two Dutch North Sea Islands yesterday.

____________________________

the local lighthouse dude made a joke

about everybody having a "bunch" now

as Tershelling Island yawned and wondered

about the new crop of pot 70 miles away in Amsterdam.

____________________________

the bananas were from Cuba and were "the kind"

we never get here in the good old USA.

because we boycott Castro.

because we don't buy commie bananas.

because we think our something doesn't stink.

_____________________________

bananas also washed up on nearby Ameland Island

as locals thought of past windfalls of tennis shoes,

brief cases and childrens toys wafting in the surf.

twenty years ago it was a load of sweaters.

now somebody can say, "yes, we have no bananas,"

but not the people of Ameland and Tershelling Islands.

Bodega Bay boats, coots and fog

It will be interesting to see how long this boat stays run aground in the middle of Bodega Bay. So far it's been there for about a month. Either one of the locals was so drunk they forgot tide tables or where they were NOT in the channel or some other happenstance of frivolity or pure lamebrainess -OR- a skipper not from the area made a silly mistake.

Just checked my tide chart and see that biggest high tide (7.1) will be on Sunday 25 November at about 10:56pm or 26, 27 Nov at either 11:44pm or 12:35am with 6.9 or 6.6 respectively. That would be the time to get that sucker off the high ground and back into the channel.
Heck, maybe they're going to just leave it there for a comical addition to the bay.

I was talking to some of the usual suspect bay coots (mudhen to some of you) and they seemed to think it was a pretty cool addition to the bay.

Next weekend I may go over to Spud Point and check out the stern to get a name off the vessel.
